How to Start a Chapter

Start a Local or State Chapter

All chapter groups are volunteer-facilitated. Services offered differ by chapter and depend on the needs of the community. Though all chapters must offer at least one free, open-to-the-public volunteer mentor support group, chapters often also develop other initiatives, including educational programs, and newsletters.

Benefits of starting an ALifeF volunteer mentor support group:

• Provide a forum for mutual acceptance, understanding, and self-discovery.
  

• Offer an opportunity to reach out to others and benefit from the experience of others.
  

• Help those attending understand that you "can live and not suffer from mental illness".
  

• Motivate attendees to follow treatment plans.
  

• Create a group that can make a difference in your community, maybe even save a life.
  

Here’s how we help:

• Referrals to your group via ALifeF’s toll-free number and this Web site.
  

• Regular informational mailings for chapter leaders.
  

• Free copies of ALifeF brochures and videotapes.
  

• Leadership training opportunities through regional and national meetings.
  

• Chapter awards program that can provide recognition and funding for your group.
  

• Use of the ALifeF name and logo.
  

The first step to beginning a group in your community is to complete the Chapter Start-Up Guide Request Form and submit it to ALifeF.

Within two weeks of submitting your form, you will receive a ALifeF Start-Up Guide. This guide includes the information and materials you will need to start an ALifeF chapter in your community.

It is through the voluntary efforts of people like you that persons living with suicidal behavior find the support and understanding they need. We at ALifeF look forward to assisting with your efforts.
